2014 Championships

A fantastic day! The 31st championships on a sunny Mother’s Day, Sunday 30th March, was a great success. Thank you to everyone who competed, dressed up, smiled, laughed and had lots of fun.

Thank you also to all the volunteers who sold tickets, made badges, wrote certificates, pointed cars in the right direction, pointed people in the right direction, handed out the coloured sticks, made waffles, cooked burgers, put up tents, took down tents, wheeled empty bins down the hill and full bins back up the hill, put up road signs, fixed banners to trees and bridges, put up safety fencing, fished sticks out of the water and were ready just in case someone fell into the water after their stick……. and shouted ONE, TWO, THREE, DROP! A huge effort by all.

The championships are run by the Rotary Club of Oxford Spires, but it wouldn’t be possible to hold this event without support from other clubs and groups. This year we would like to thank the Rotary Clubs of Bicester, Eynsham, Wallingford Sinodun and District, Chichester Priory and Windsor St George, Rotaract Clubs of Oxford and Langley & Ivor, Aspire Oxford, The Church Didcot, 15th Didcot Scouts and residents of Little Wittenham. And of course thank you also to family and friends who help out too.

Thank you also to the other groups who set up stalls for the day – Ellie on face painting, the RNLI, the RSPB, Jane’s husband selling fudge, Andrew with the Rotary Shelterbox and Debs selling jewellery.

And a final thank you our sponsors, all shown on each page of the website, and to the media who came along, took photos and conducted interviews. There were lovely photos in the Telegraph and Oxford Mail on Monday and we were featured on BBC Radio Oxford, Jack FM, BBC Radio Berkshire and on ITV Meridian. It all helps our charity fundraising efforts.
