After a nasty virus stopped Pooh and his friends from visiting the Hundred Acre Wood for a few years, The World Poohsticks Championships is returning to a bridge over the River Thames, at Sandford Lock on May 28th 2023!
Organised from 2023 by the Rotary Club of Abingdon (UK), the Poohsticks game was regularly played on the River Windrush near Witney from 2015 to 2018. Before then it was held on the River Thames at Little Wittenham near Wallingford. Started by the lock keeper, then handed over to the Rotary Club of Sinodun, it was passed onto the Rotary Club of Oxford Spires in 2009, and from 2023 all Poohsticks will be provided by The Rotary Club of Abingdon UK, supported by many other Rotary clubs and community groups.
This year we will be running individual Pooh Sticks games, plus other food stalls and some displays of Rotary activities and other charities, and groups will have stalls. The event is supported by ….
If you, or your club or group, or just a group of friends are interested in coming along to help out then that would be great. We don’t run this primarily as a fundraising event, however in previous years Rotarians have raised over £3,000 in total. If your group came along to help, then we would hope to be able to give a donation to your group or chosen charity, but we can’t guarantee this. We can however guarantee that it’s a fun day, even if hard work.
It is a relatively short day:
Games on the bridge will start around midday and the event is planned to finish around 4pm. We are looking for volunteers to help with set up in the morning from 8am, running the event from midday to 4pm and also with packing up in the evening until around 7pm.
Activities with which you might be asked to help include:
- Setting up and packing away tents, tables, chairs and fencing
- Setting up and packing away road signs and site signs
- Directing cars and pedestrians
- Helping the Keeper of the Sticks, or the bridge marshals or the line marshals on the main
games - Helping in the registration tent
